    ARC: A compact, high-field, fusion nuclear science facility and demonstration power plant with demountable magnets

    The affordable, robust, compact (ARC) reactor is the product of a conceptual design study aimed at reducing the size, cost, and complexity of a combined fusion nuclear science facility (FNSF) and demonstration fusion Pilot power plant. ARC is a ∼200–250 MWe tokamak reactor with a major radius of 3.3 m, a minor radius of 1.1 m, and an on-axis magnetic field of 9.2 T. ARC has rare earth barium copper oxide (REBCO) superconducting toroidal field coils, which have joints to enable disassembly. This allows the vacuum vessel to be replaced quickly, mitigating first wall survivability concerns, and permits a single device to test many vacuum vessel designs and divertor materials. The design point has a plasma fusion gain of Q[subscript p] ≈ 13.6, yet is fully non-inductive, with a modest bootstrap fraction of only ∼63%. Thus ARC offers a high power gain with relatively large external control of the current profile. This highly attractive combination is enabled by the ∼23 T peak field on coil achievable with newly available REBCO superconductor technology. External current drive is provided by two innovative inboard RF launchers using 25 MW of lower hybrid and 13.6 MW of ion cyclotron fast wave power. The resulting efficient current drive provides a robust, steady state core plasma far from disruptive limits. ARC uses an all-liquid blanket, consisting of low pressure, slowly flowing fluorine lithium beryllium (FLiBe) molten salt. The liquid blanket is low-risk technology and provides effective neutron moderation and shielding, excellent heat removal, and a tritium breeding ratio ≥ 1.1. The large temperature range over which FLiBe is liquid permits an output blanket temperature of 900 K, single phase fluid cooling, and a high efficiency helium Brayton cycle, which allows for net electricity generation when operating ARC as a Pilot power plant.United States.     Correlation ECE diagnostic in Alcator C-Mod

    Correlation ECE (CECE) is a diagnostic technique that allows measurement of small amplitude electron temperature, T[subscript e], fluctuations through standard cross-correlation analysis methods. In Alcator C-Mod, a new CECE diagnostic has been installed[Sung RSI 2012], and interesting phenomena have been observed in various plasma conditions. We find that local T[subscript e] fluctuations near the edge (ρ ~ 0:8) decrease across the linearto- saturated ohmic confinement transition, with fluctuations decreasing with increasing plasma density[Sung NF 2013], which occurs simultaneously with rotation reversals[Rice NF 2011]. T[subscript e] fluctuations are also reduced across core rotation reversals with an increase of plasma density in RF heated L-mode plasmas, which implies that the same physics related to the reduction of T[subscript e] fluctuations may be applied to both ohmic and RF heated L-mode plasmas. In I-mode plasmas, we observe the reduction of core T[subscript e] fluctuations, which indicates changes of turbulence occur not only in the pedestal region but also in the core across the L/I transition[White NF 2014].     Nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations of the I-mode high confinement regime and comparisons with experimenta)

    For the first time, nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations of I-mode plasmas are performed and compared with experiment. I-mode is a high confinement regime, featuring energy confinement similar to H-mode, but without enhanced particle and impurity particle confinement [D. G. Whyte et al., Nucl. Fusion 50, 105005 (2010)]. As a consequence of the separation between heat and particle transport, I-mode exhibits several favorable characteristics compared to H-mode. The nonlinear gyrokinetic code GYRO [J. Candy and R. E. Waltz, J Comput. Phys. 186, 545 (2003)] is used to explore the effects of E × B shear and profile stiffness in I-mode and compare with L-mode. The nonlinear GYRO simulations show that I-mode core ion temperature and electron temperature profiles are more stiff than L-mode core plasmas. Scans of the input E × B shear in GYRO simulations show that E × B shearing of turbulence is a stronger effect in the core of I-mode than L-mode. The nonlinear simulations match the observed reductions in long wavelength density fluctuation levels across the L-I transition but underestimate the reduction of long wavelength electron temperature fluctuation levels. The comparisons between experiment and gyrokinetic simulations for I-mode suggest that increased E × B shearing of turbulence combined with increased profile stiffness are responsible for the reductions in core turbulence observed in the experiment, and that I-mode resembles H-mode plasmas more than L-mode plasmas with regards to marginal stability and temperature profile stiffness.United States.     Non-local heat transport in Alcator C-Mod ohmic L-mode plasmas

    Non-local heat transport experiments were performed in Alcator C-Mod ohmic L-mode plasmas by inducing edge cooling with laser blow-off impurity (CaF2) injection. The non-local effect, a cooling of the edge electron temperature with a rapid rise of the central electron temperature, which contradicts the assumption of 'local' transport, was observed in low collisionality linear ohmic confinement (LOC) regime plasmas. Transport analysis shows this phenomenon can be explained either by a fast drop of the core diffusivity, or the sudden appearance of a heat pinch. In high collisionality saturated ohmic confinement (SOC) regime plasmas, the thermal transport becomes 'local': the central electron temperature drops on the energy confinement time scale in response to the edge cooling. Measurements from a high resolution imaging x-ray spectrometer show that the ion temperature has a similar behaviour as the electron temperature in response to edge cooling, and that the transition density of non-locality correlates with the rotation reversal critical density. This connection may indicate the possible connection between thermal and momentum transport, which is also linked to a transition in turbulence dominance between trapped electron modes (TEMs) and ion temperature gradient (ITG) modes. Experiments with repetitive cold pulses in one discharge were also performed to allow Fourier analysis and to provide details of cold front propagation. These modulation experiments showed in LOC plasmas that the electron thermal transport is not purely diffusive, while in SOC the electron thermal transport is more diffusive like. Linear gyrokinetic simulations suggest the turbulence outside r/a = 0.75 changes from TEM dominance in LOC plasmas to ITG mode dominance in SOC plasmas.United States.     20 years of research on the Alcator C-Mod tokamak

    The object of this review is to summarize the achievements of research on the Alcator C-Mod tokamak [Hutchinson et al., Phys. Plasmas 1, 1511 (1994) and Marmar, Fusion Sci. Technol. 51, 261 (2007)] and to place that research in the context of the quest for practical fusion energy. C-Mod is a compact, high-field tokamak, whose unique design and operating parameters have produced a wealth of new and important results since it began operation in 1993, contributing data that extends tests of critical physical models into new parameter ranges and into new regimes. Using only high-power radio frequency (RF) waves for heating and current drive with innovative launching structures, C-Mod operates routinely at reactor level power densities and achieves plasma pressures higher than any other toroidal confinement device. C-Mod spearheaded the development of the vertical-target divertor and has always operated with high-Z metal plasma facing components—approaches subsequently adopted for ITER. C-Mod has made ground-breaking discoveries in divertor physics and plasma-material interactions at reactor-like power and particle fluxes and elucidated the critical role of cross-field transport in divertor operation, edge flows and the tokamak density limit. C-Mod developed the I-mode and the Enhanced Dα H-mode regimes, which have high performance without large edge localized modes and with pedestal transport self-regulated by short-wavelength electromagnetic waves. C-Mod has carried out pioneering studies of intrinsic rotation and demonstrated that self-generated flow shear can be strong enough in some cases to significantly modify transport. C-Mod made the first quantitative link between the pedestal temperature and the H-mode's performance, showing that the observed self-similar temperature profiles were consistent with critical-gradient-length theories and followed up with quantitative tests of nonlinear gyrokinetic models. RF research highlights include direct experimental observation of ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) mode-conversion, ICRF flow drive, demonstration of lower-hybrid current drive at ITER-like densities and fields and, using a set of novel diagnostics, extensive validation of advanced RF codes. Disruption studies on C-Mod provided the first observation of non-axisymmetric halo currents and non-axisymmetric radiation in mitigated disruptions.     Experimental study of turbulent heat transport in Alcator C-Mod

A new Correlation Electron Cyclotron Emission (CECE) diagnostic was designed and installed as a part of this thesis work. Using this diagnostic, we measured local T fluctuations in r/a >/~ 0.75 in C-Mod for the first time. This thesis work provided new information about the Ohmic confinement transition, from the linear to the saturated confinement regime with the increase in average density. It was found that Te fluctuations near the edge (r/a0~.85) tend to decrease across the Ohmic confinement transition. Although the Ohmic confinement transition has been considered predominantly as a result of the linear turbulence mode transition, we found no changes in the dominant turbulence mode across this transition via gyrokinetic analysis using the code, GYRO. The GYRO simulations performed near the edge reproduce experimental ion heat flux and Te fluctuations, but electron heat flux was under-predicted. Considering that both ion heat flux and the T fluctuations mainly come from ion scale turbulence, the under-prediction of electron heat flux suggests the importance of electron scale turbulence. Intrinsic rotation reversals in C-Mod plasmas were studied in this thesis. Similar changes in electron temperature fluctuations, the reduction of Te fluctuations near the edge, were observed across RF rotation reversals and Ohmic rotation reversals. The gyrokinetic and self-similarity analyses also showed similarities between rotation reversals in Ohmic and RF heated discharges. These observations suggest that the physics of Ohmic confinement transition and the rotation reversal can be applied to the physics of rotation reversal in RF heated discharges. This thesis also found the reduction of Te fluctuations inside pedestal region with the transition from low to high energy confinement regime, which indicates the changes in core turbulence are correlated with the global energy confinement.by Choongki Sung.Ph.     Electron temperature fluctuations associated with the weakly coherent mode in the edge of I-mode plasmas

    New measurements of electron temperature fluctuations associated with the weakly coherent mode (WCM) during improved mode, or I-mode plasmas (Whyte et al 2010 Nucl. Fusion. 50 105005) at Alcator C-Mod (Marmar et al 2007 Fusion. Sci. Technol. 51 3261) are presented in this paper. The measurements are made with a 32-channel, high-resolution profile electron cyclotron emission radiometer. The WCM electron temperature fluctuations are localized to a 1 cm region inside the last closed flux surface. The WCM electron temperature fluctuation level is measured in several different I-mode discharges and is in the range 1% [~ over T][subscript e/T[subscript e] < 2%, which is an order of magnitude smaller than the WCM density fluctuation level. The WCM edge fluctuations observed in I-mode are believed to play a role in increasing particle transport but not energy transport in the edge of I-mode plasmas. The large difference between normalized density and electron temperature fluctuation amplitudes provides new evidence that the WCM fluctuations can separately affect energy and particle transport.United States.     Ambient PM Concentrations as a Precursor of Emergency Visits for Respiratory Complaints: Roles of Deep Learning and Multi-Point Real-Time Monitoring

    Despite ample evidence that high levels of particulate matter (PM) are associated with increased emergency visits related to respiratory diseases, little has been understood about how prediction processes could be improved by incorporating real-time data from multipoint monitoring stations. While previous studies use traditional statistical models, this study explored the feasibility of deep learning algorithms to improve the accuracy of predicting daily emergency hospital visits by tracking their spatiotemporal association with PM concentrations. We compared the predictive accuracy of the models based on PM datasets collected between 1 December 2019 and 31 December 2021 from a single but more accurate air monitoring station in each district (Air Korea) and multiple but less accurate monitoring sites (Korea Testing & Research Institute; KTR) within Guro District in Seoul, South Korea. We used MLP (multilayer perceptron) to integrate PM data from multiple locations and then LSTM (long short-term memory) models to incorporate the intrinsic temporal PM trends into the learning process. The results reveal evidence that predictive accuracy is improved from 1.67 to 0.79 in RMSE when spatial variations of air pollutants from multi-point stations are incorporated in the algorithm as a 9-day time window. The findings suggest guidelines on how environmental and health policymakers can arrange limited resources for emergency care and design ambient air monitoring and prevention strategies
